N900: The Saga Begins…

11 01 2010

It seems that NewEgg does not require UPS to have signature confirmation on their $700 delivered packages. How convenient. UPS has “delivered” the N900 to my “FRONT DOOR” according to their tracking page;

Well, it’s not actually there. After a brief chat with a NewEgg representative, I’ll be waiting 7-10 days for an answer as to where my package is. I’ve never had UPS just leave stuff here. I’ve always had to sign for UPS. DHL, FedEx and USPS (CanadaPost takes the blame once it crosses the border) have all dropped stuff on my porch and left it – stuff worth hundreds of dollars. This is why I went with NewEgg and UPS shipping, I’ve always had to sign for it – or I receive a phone call and we schedule a time for delivery.

I talked with another rep today, and he told me they are in contact with UPS so far, and will be e-mail me shortly. Worse comes to worst, I will dispute it with MBNA/Mastercard and fill my pockets with the missing cashflow.

Having said that, I’m not worried – as NewEgg has excellent customer service, and between them and UPS – I will get my N900, or I’ll get my money back, and simply order another one and set the delivery to a work address. I’ve been hounding the Maemo boards again and re-activated my account from when I worked on the N810.

Everything will be going swimmingly soon.

Thumbs up for the bum rush!

No Updates

4 02 2009

Long time since I’ve had a new post. Expect a review of Handy Shell + Handy Weather on E71 since I haven’t really seen too many. I was request by a friend to do a review of S60Ticker so, I’ll do that too, but not the NewsReader Ticker, since I despise it.

I’ll also make a length post of the in-depth customizations on my E71 that makes a heck of a device for me. I’m also working on a patch for ROMPatcher that will replace the Active Standby SMS envelope indicator and allow it to directly open Conversations.

N82 Arrives

27 11 2008

My N82 has finally arrived.

My initial impressions are ‘ho hum’. E71 has really spoiled me with full QWERTY. The numerical keys on the 82 are very small. The soft keys, d-pad and media+menu keys are horribly placed. I don’t have large hands by any means so I know it’s not me, but I can not get used to using those keys. The d-pad is also much flatter and gives less feedback than I am used to. The screen is nice and large for a handset of this size.

I will give it a try for a few weeks and try to get used to Nokia’s T9 (again) and the subtle differences between N and E-series devices (again).

:( N82 & New Nokia Maps

21 11 2008

Still waiting for my new N82 from the S60 Team. I haven’t written any S60 Ambassadors reports recently, been busy. New Nokia Maps is out, no visual changes or anything – I did experience quicker lock times on my E71 however. That alone is worth installing the new one. Just a direct install and it will over-write the previous version. Here’s the link;

New service? Emoroom?

17 11 2008

I stumbled across emoroom.com which is a weird service touted for “couples”. It documents calls, messages and such between your two handsets. It can also remotely vibrate and turn on/off display of the handsets. . Here’s an excerpt from their FAQ which is pretty damn weird.

“All of the partners phone conversations, all of the text messages, MMS-es, e-mails and tunes they exchange will be stored on a private web page no one but them will have access to.”

“Our calendar was inspired by a Buddhist prayer book and is supposed to remind you how important it is to be together and to care about one another.”

I guess if you want to run patterns of your communication and time spent ‘together’ while physically apart it might be useful?

I am also still waiting for my N82. Was a small hold up with DHL shipping but it’s been cleared up. I’m also told it’s not pre-loved.

HandWave BETA

14 11 2008

HandWave BETA is out – currently only available to those who donate. I tried it on my E71 however it only supports portrait screen orientation! If my N82 arrives today I’ll be giving it a thorough run-through. I have an unsigned release which is not IMEI tied, from a testing dev. Send me an email if you think you deserve it.

New Share Online. No love for FP1.

14 11 2008

BetaLabs has dropped a new Share Online Beta 4.0 – the catch? No love for ANY FP1 devices. Claims to only be functional on FP2 devices. FriendView also gets an update thanks to the built-in checking abilities. It will automatically ask you to install 83.3 however there are no noticeable changes that I can see. I wish the off-screen arrows would be a bit easier to reach.

Still waiting for DHL to drop by with my N82. I’ll have some pictures of it when I get it – even though it’s been handled by pretty much everybody, I haven’t really used it.

Until then!

S60 Report of the Week

7 11 2008

I won S60 Report of the Week. Quite a surprise to me. I knew I was doing good with my reports but not this good! Main reason I started up this blog was to report of S60 and Nokia doings. On one of my recent S60 Ambassador reports I got some feedback directly from the S60 team that warmed my heart…or it might have been the hot chocolate and Bailey’s I was drinking. Either way, it went a little something like this;

“Hahaha great report once again – true comedian. I hope you write your own blog or something, the writing style is excellent.”

And here I am with my own blog of some sorts. So, I’m completely stoked to try out the old-but-new-to-me N82. It was a choice between an E71 or N82. I certainly would have liked one of their new flagship devices (N96 or N85 anybody?) but this is still beyond neat.

I will post when my loaner arrives and we’ll see what happens next. I’m on the rise. For the time being, if there are any readers (if I indeed have readers) that would like anything, a software review or the likes – drop me a line; simon@series60.ca and you can be hooked up. I am also giving out free series60.ca email addresses. Check if you qualify!

Out.

Scheduled Sync to Ovi / SyncML

6 11 2008

If you’ve ever used an SyncML service such as Mobical or the recently opened Sync on Ovi service,  you’ll know that it’s a manual task to sync as there is no way to set a time or schedule for it to be completed. Thanks to the fine folks running behind the Bergamot Project (http://code.google.com/p/bergamot/) it is now possible.

Recently added is an application called Swim as allows you to set a timer for syncing to the servers stored in the Sync settings. This is a nice addition and hopefully it works as advertised. There seems to always be something left out by Nokia – but thanks to the great S60 platform it can be rectified by the community.

Series 60 Canada

6 11 2008

This is the temporary page for my blog. Mostly Nokia and S60 stuff. I’ll setup a server somewhere my basement to run it later on.
